You, Me and Dean

The reason Men hate ‘Twilight’…(a rant of self realization)

I want to hurt you but I love this photo, gorm.

Right, since watching the freakish “omg i is like still pretendin’ to av some like relationship with both of teh actors from tweeeelight but it is lyke not real cause it is a film but ya still buying it. oh btw, look at my dikey new hair style! w00t.” (that is an actual technical term commonly used in the *sigh* ‘Twilight Saga’ marketing campaign), I think I have discovered my reason to hate Twilight.

And I don’t like it.

I know a majority of my followers are girls (that doesn’t mean you like ‘Twilight’, but that is the generalization the internet has placed on you), but I must stress that I didn’t particularly like or dislike ‘Twilight’. In fact, it was an overall decent film with some really interesting style points.

But it has come to my attention that the reason people bitch about this franchise so much is not the film - but the representation of its audience. It’s practically a parallel to what Men think of Megan Fox - society has embraced the idea that showing off Women in a seductive fashion is “okay”. And as Men don’t really find this a problem, I believe we all feel a little threatened with sharing such desires that have, till now, been ours to flaunt.

The new trailer that premiered for ‘New Moon’ is in most cases just a shirtless showdown between the supporting male actors and as a majority of men don’t have MASSIVE ABS, I think we all start to feel a little less desirable to the opposite sex. The same goes for Women, just not in the ‘Twilight’ sense. Women have always felt pressured to wear make-up that would add up to about four layers of additional skin and wear barely nothing to, well, get Men. And it looks like the tables are turning, just they’re vampires and, as far as I am aware, that is a factor we can’t change*.

And as the franchise continues it is inevitable that this will continue and most likely will branch out to other media texts. Society is changing, it’s a scary reality we must all embrace. Just the idea that a movie about Vampire-ish characters that glitter in the daylight is what has caused such a massive shift in socially acceptable desire, is well…chilling.

*If you know how to make me into a Vampire, tweet me asap. I need to be sexay.
